Refractory α-SiAlON Containing La2O3

چکیده
Refractory Y-α-SiAlON with elongated grain morphology was obtained by utilizing La2O3 as a densification aid, which resulted in excellent room-temperature and high-temperature strength. Room-temperature strength of 1000 MPa was achieved when La2O3 was augmented by adding Y2O3 or removing AlN. With only La2O3, a temperature-independent strength of 800–950 MPa was maintained up to 1100°C, then gradually decreasing by 25% when reaching 1300°C. The R-curve measurements of fracture toughness showed relatively little dependence on microstructure, consistent with a strong interface that suppresses grain boundary decohesion. Compared with other densification aids such as SiO2, Al2O3, Sc2O3, Y2O3, and Lu2O3, a finer microstructure was obtained by using La2O3. High nitrogen content in the residual La–Si–Al–O–N glass in equilibrium with the nitrogen-rich α-SiAlON is suggested to be the cause of these findings. The Effect of Powder Mixing Procedures on α- SiAlON
Various procedures of mixing starting powders for hot-pressing α-SiAlON ceramics were studied. They included different milling methods (attrition milling, ball milling, and sonication), liquid medium (water, isopropyl alcohol, and pyridine), and atmospheres (ambient air and nitrogen). These mixing procedures resulted in markedly different densification behavior and fired ceramics. As the powder...
متن کاملElimination of Grain Boundary Glass in α-Sialon by Adding Aluminium
The elimination of residual glass in hot-pressed Y-α-SiAlON was demonstrated by varying the nitride composition. This was readily achieved by adding excess aluminium nitride (AlN), while the addition of excess Si3N4 had little effect. The amount of excess AlN required for this purpose increased with increasing Al and O content in α-SiAlON, and was higher if α-SiAlON contained larger interstitia...
متن کاملEffect of Seeding on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of alpha-SiAlON: II, Ca-alpha-SiAlON
Seeding effects on the microstructure and mechanical properties of single-phase Ca-α-SiAlON ceramics have been investigated. Whereas a small amount of seeds can transform the microstructure from one of fine equiaxed grains to one consisting of many needle-like grains, the highest fracture toughness of 8 MPa . m1/2 is not reached until 8% seeding. This contrasts with the much higher seed efficie...
متن کاملOxidation of Ca-α-SiAlON Powders Prepared by Combustion Synthesis
The oxidation of Ca-α-SiAlON synthesized by the combustion synthesis (CS) method with different additives was investigated in air atmosphere using thermogravimetric (TG) analysis in a temperature range from 1453 K to 1653 K. The experimental results indicated that oxidation was controlled by mixed chemical and diffusion steps. The oxidation products by XRD analysis were composed of SiO₂ and CaA...

A study was performed to investigate the effect of increasing the Al or Al2O3 precursor content, above the stoichiometric amount, on the formation of β-sialon by pressureless sintering of Al, Si and Al2O3 powders in flowing nitrogen gas. The effect of adding Y2O3 or Fe to the precursor mixture, on the β-sialon formation, was also studied. The phase morphology and yield produced by the various c...
